Welcome to the Benshen Book Club — a space to explore bold ideas, powerful stories, and the books that shape how we see ourselves and the world around us.
Each month, we’ll read a new title together—ranging from stories on myth to personal memoirs to timeless classics—and gather for conversation, inspiration and reflection. Expect expanding ideas, behind-the-scenes insights, and conversations that inspire you to think deeper, feel more, and connect with others who are just as curious as you.
Let’s read the world —together.
JUNE PICK
When God Was A Woman by Merlin Stone
This month, we’re reading When God Was a Woman by Merlin Stone, a groundbreaking work of feminist history and archaeology that explores a time—long before patriarchal religions dominated—when societies across the ancient world worshipped female deities as the primary divine power.
Published in 1976, the book presents compelling evidence from mythology, archaeological findings, and ancient texts to argue that early human civilizations—especially in the Near East, Mediterranean, and parts of Europe—once centered their spiritual, cultural, and political lives around the worship of the Great Goddess.
