"THERE IS NOTHING MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN KINDNESS. PROJECTING KINDNESS FROM THE INSIDE CREATES BEAUTY ON THE OUTSIDE...I GUARANTEE YOU WILL FEEL ABSOLUTELY RADIANT."
RITUAL • What are your daily inner + outer rituals to cultivate beauty and radiance?
When I became a Vegan my entire body changed for the better. My heart, my mind even my soul feels so much cleaner and lighter and it shows through my skin! I can tell immediately when I have had too much indulgence (I can NEVER turn down a vegan treat) and I believe that it's because I work so hard at keeping all of the toxic stuff out there away from my body so it operates more smoothly.
NOURISH • What are your staples for beauty + wellness + radiance?
Coming from the desert in New Mexico, we had the cleanest drinking water around. My mother always made sure we were drinking it constantly and I try and keep up that practice by having a full container of water within arms reach no matter where I am! I also make sure that I eat something green and organic every day. There are so many wonderful options out there for you to fuel your body with!
BODY • How do you keep your body healthy, strong, and powerful?
I am 100% guilty of the "I don't have time to workout" or "I'll get to it tomorrow, i'd rather lay in bed" mentality. But the fact is, no matter how much I dread the thought of going to work out I've never left a class feeling worse than when I started. I am always so thankful after a great sweat and I feel as though I've accomplished something great for my body! Not to mention that after a really rigorous class (usually cycling) my skin absolutely GLOWS! Well, after the purple face calms down that is... I have different workouts for different moods I'm in. Sometimes I want to work out until I drown out all of the stress from work, relationships, pressures, general New York City living (ya know what i'm talking 'bout) and sometimes I want to just spend sometime with myself and do a peaceful Yoga flow.
MIND • How do you stay grounded, confident, and centered in this modern day craziness we call life?
As much as any other woman in this city I have moments of self doubt, insecurity and pressures. When these emotions overcome me I make myself stop what I am doing and think about something silly that I love about myself. It can be as simple as "I love that my favorite game right now is Cribbage" or "I love that I can't wear white without inevitably spilling something on myself" (but really...its a problem).
We are caught up so often over what we may think is beautiful to others that we forget how beautiful just being an individual is. There is so much FREEDOM in that!
I also love making a reservation for myself at a really nice restaurant and taking a book to read or a sketchpad or notebook to write in. Seriously, I will call and say "Table for one please, at 830pm" and then when I arrive (all dressed up because I want to look good for myself) I will shut off my phone for an hour while I catch up with just being ME. Best thing is, it's always a great date. Give it a try. It can be a little intimidating and uncomfortable at first but you'll be so surprised at how great it feels to treat yourself. We deserve it.
SPIRIT • BENSHEN means 'root of the spirit' - how do you root your spirit into your life, which in turn, keeps your body beautiful, healthy, and radiant?
No one said living in New York City was easy and quite frankly, if it was, I wouldn't want any part f it. In a fast pace, often cut throat, judgmental, and unforgiving environment, we constantly push ourselves to succeed above the rest. Bu we as women owe it to ourselves to also take the time to nurture one another and support one another. When I moved here (oh, young, naive, little Elizabeth, you poor thing!) I was fortunate to have women who took me under their wings and made it much easier for me to learn and get up quickly when I was knocked down. Now that I'm a little more seasoned (okay, much more seasoned) and wiser, I honor the women who looked out for me by looking out for others who need support. I have also surrounded myself with other powerful, confident, and successful women so that we can all hold each other accountable for our dreams and goals. Even the women who look like they have everything in the world going for them go through ups and downs that you are experiencing. We all need each other.
